The Power of Focus

Ready to figure out what really matters to you and how to create an extraordinary life?

Here are 3 things you can do.

  1. Write out you life’s vision.

In scripture it is written, “Write the vision and make it plain.”

Don’t anticipate a clear, perfect and well-defined vision overnight though, it takes time to form. So don’t worry, spend as much time as you need creating it. It may take one hour, several days or even several weeks.

First, start thinking about your dreams, hopes, and goals, as well as your values in life. Ask yourself what you want and why you want it. Be honest with yourself and remember that it is OK to dream big. The bigger the better.

Be sure to focus on your aspirations not what others expect of you or what you think you should do. If you feel stuck ask yourself, “How can I serve?”

And when you focus only on what you want, not on what you don’t want, you will get exactly what you want.

Be sure you think about all the areas of your life: romantic relationships, friendships, family, career, personal growth, hobbies, health and quality of life and so on. You’d be amazed how all areas of our life inter-link together.

After you’ve outlined the most important things, add details.

Your vision should provide some detail about what measurable results you are going to achieve in your life and when.

Relax and make this exercise fun. You can always come back to it later and change, add or remove something.

  1. Make a list of thing you love to do.

A couple of questions to ask yourself are:

  • What does your ideal day look like?
  • Who are you spending it with?
  • What are you doing?
  • When have you been happiest in your life?
  • What makes you feel really alive and invigorated?

Take a pen and a piece of paper and write down everything that comes to mind. Even if it’s something really small, like “reading a good book” or “working on the house” or something big like “travelling around the world”.

The purpose is to make the list as long as possible. I suggest thinking of 101 things if you can. After you’re done, go through your list and mark the things that are your favorite. This way you will be able to narrow it down to the things you really love to do and you won’t leave out anything.

  1. Write down all you talents, passions and principles.

The goal of this step is to get you to get an even better idea of who you are.

Foremost, write down all the things you’re good at or are very knowledgeable about. Remember, you don’t have to be really talented or gifted, just good at these things. Don’t be reluctant. Try to come up with as many things as possible. Talk to your friends and coworkers to ask them what you should put on that list. Their answers may astonish you.

Next, list your genuine passions and interests. You can take all of the things that you put on your list in the previous step, but also add the things that are just important to you – your principles. For example, friendships, health, spirituality, fitness, love etc. If you know your ideals, then you know what you want, you know who you are, you know where you stand in life.

After you have completed these steps, review what you have written daily to help you remain focused and moving confidently toward your goals.
