Pursuing Your Purpose as a Working Mom

As a woman, we are often asked to take on many roles. We are strong and independent, capable of taking care of ourselves but also of others, especially our children and our husband. We are often mediators between or among our children, counselors when they have problems, cooks to feed our family, social workers in our community, and so many other things. While mothers derive purpose from taking care of her children, more and more mothers are also expected to build careers and strike a balance between work and family. How then are mothers supposed to pursue their purpose in work given these conflicting priorities?

It can be difficult to pursue purpose at work when family often is a more important priority. There can even be a sense of guilt that a working mother carries knowing that she is not spending 100% of her time with her family. However, we need to acknowledge that a large part of our responsibility as a mother includes providing for our family. Part of being a mother involves putting food on the table and helping provide quality education and all other needs of the family. Therefore, part of pursuing our purpose as mothers often includes leading a life in the professional world.

The book of Proverbs highlights that a good woman is one who provides for her family, who is able to help other people, and also supports her husband. She is virtuous, patient, kind, and hardworking. This book of Proverbs can help inspire us as we pursue our purpose at work, giving us role models of women to emulate, who were often mothers themselves.

Whatever work a mother pursues, it is important to note that it should complement her duties to care for her family first and foremost. Pursuing your purpose at work should always be in line with your purpose at home—they should not be contradictory. For example, if a working mother is feeling tremendous pressure at work to attend social events that are not in line with her values, she may want to take a long hard look at the particular career she has chosen to pursue.

Lastly, as a mother, times will be tough, and sometimes work will get in the way of family time, or tire you out, leaving you with even less time for your family. This is where, as mothers, we need to continue to persevere. If times get tough, some decisions need to be made, and some mothers have worked doubly hard, or have even resigned from jobs to take on new careers that are more in line with their family’s needs. Pursuing one’s purpose still needs steadfastness and a plan, and while it will not be smooth sailing all the time, pursuing one’s purpose at work as a mother is always fulfilling, especially as a way for providing for the family, for oneself and of course for one’s family.
