Five Mistakes That Keep You From Finding Your Purpose
As people, we want to have some kind of purpose in life—an answer to the question “why” that keeps us going. However, for some of us, finding this purpose is not easy. Sometimes, it’s not clear as to what we are meant to do with our life. If you feel that you are stuck and are unsure as to what to do, you may be doing something that is hindering you from figuring things out. Here are five of those things that could possibly be making it difficult for you to find your purpose.
- You don’t set aside time to reflect on your purpose
The fast paced lifestyle we have today is often not conducive for reflection. When was the last time we actually set aside time to just pray and reflect on who we are and what we want to do with our life? It’s important that we set aside some time to actually think things through and figure things out. Sometimes, it is reflection time that allows us to clear our minds and focus on what we really want to do.
- You don’t pay attention to your feelings
While we ought to think logically about our purpose in life, sometimes we also forget about our feelings—what our gut instincts tell us. The Christian faith tells us that God can also speak to us through our feelings. If you are doing something and you have feelings of dissatisfaction and restlessness, pay attention—that might be God’s way of telling you that there are greater things ahead or in store for you.
- You let your friends or family decide for you
Sometimes it can be terribly difficult to make decisions, and we can be very indecisive. Because of this, it can be tempting to simply go with what our friends and family think. Many people often take on a certain profession or goal in life because that was what was expected from them. While this may be good, it can also sometimes lead to us stagnating and settling, when in truth we could go on and do things that are truly our passion.
- You are afraid to make mistakes or to change
Often, we want to be able to get it right the first time. We don’t allow ourselves to make mistakes. If we have discerned our passion, and find that we are wrong or are being led to somewhere else due to new information or new needs, it’s important to be open to change and to pick ourselves up if we have made a decision that does not seem to be quite right.
- You want to be sure ALL the time
Lastly, people usually want certainty. This is normal, and of course we want to be sure before committing to something, in order to make sure we can stick by it through thick or thin. However, we also need to realize that our purpose will still have some uncertainty in terms of the details, how it will pan out, and where it will lead you. Always know that despite the risks and uncertainty, God is with you every step of the way, and that your purpose, while there will be many twists and turns along the way, will always be something worth your while that will leave you with a certain peace and joy that comes with finding who you are and what you are meant to do.
